“Abformer” is a modelingtool for molding real objects, construct fictitious digital objects and manipulate existing digital objects. By the way of using this haptic device the user is not only able to be aware of the visually desired digital object.

The structure of the “Abformer” is composed of an assembly of plate elements and hinges. Between the hinges in the middle are built in trimmpotentiometer, thereby it is possible to determine the angles between the plates. They are connected with copper foil on the surface of the plates and on the borders with cables. The combination of all conductive elements ends in a connection to the connected Arduino Mega. The Arduino is used as a collector of the resulting data and also as an interface to other programs. The collected angles are sended to Cinema 4D via Python and used by Xpresso to fold the virtual model almost simultaneously.

The basic shape of the plates consists of an equilateral triangle. The simple definition of a triangle is ideal for a module system to cover many conditions like a blanket. The finished test model got as a base three hexagons that are equipped with 12 potentiometers.
